Multi-Generational Homes - Why a Larger Home May Make Sense

"The share of the U.S. population living in multigenerational households in 2021 was 18%...multigenerational living has grown steadily in the U.S. since the 1970s," Pew Research Center says. In the Columbia, MO area, we have noticed a significant increase since the onset of the global pandemic.

A multi-generational home is when at least two generations of a family live under the same roof. This could look like parents living with their grown children, grandparents living with their children and grandchildren, etc. Hemme Construction has been blessed to help some families achieve the dream of this style of home. The multi-generational homes we have built have been fun, challenging, and incredibly rewarding. Families can have many motivations for choosing the lifestyle that comes with a multi-generational home .

When asked what led them to building a multi-generation home instead of a traditional single-family home, our clients said "we knew the benefits and drawbacks of muti-generational living arrangements based on family history, so we were prepared for what it would mean to have a multi-generational home". With having strong relationships with their grandparents, they wanted the same for their children, saying they also "realized the benefit of having grandparents present to help out occasionally with the kids".

When designing a multi-generation home, there are many unique selections that you have to keep in mind. "For the grandparent suite, we wanted to make sure we had amenities available that would be helpful as either set of grandparents continued to age, but we also wanted to make sure that the grandparents had a sense of autonomy while they are able to continue doing routine things for themselves, like cooking," one of our clients says. Simple things such as mowing one lawn, planning family gatherings, consolidating toys, and having others available to drop off and pick up kids from school were some of the added benefits of building a multi-generational home.

Although some simple things were added benefits to building, specifics such as "two front doors so that both parties could welcome guests, two garages, two entertaining and living spaces, and access to the yard" were intentionally thought about when drawing the floor plan. "We made sure that all entrances were compatible with the width of a wheelchair, should one ever be required, and that proper supports were present in the bathroom and shower for stability. Who says you need color to be cute? We recently finished up this dark and moody custom home! What seems to make this house a home is the high contrast that comes in small doses - the dark stone on the exterior, the glossy black fixtures, and the moody fireplace that welcomes anyone in. All of these little details don't make you miss the color throughout this home!

As soon as you walk through the front door, you are greeted with high ceilings featuring a stunning beam, gorgeous hardwood floors, and a fireplace you can't not fall in love with! But wait, there's so much more!

This jaw dropping kitchen encourages guests to gather around and share quality time together! The combination of the dark cabinets, and white countertops bring the moodiness in from the living room.

The stunning details don't stop! As you walk into the primary bedroom, you are presented with tall ceilings and custom light fixtures that lead you straight into the primary bathroom!

We had so much fun helping this custom client making their moody dream come true!

The "Who" Behind Hemme

If we could give you one sales pitch as to why you should build with Hemme Construction Custom Homes it would be this: You will have an entire team of experienced individuals working on your one home.

We take our clients very seriously here at Hemme, & understand the importance of making your house a home.

At Hemme, we use a team based approach on all of our homes. On one home, you will have at least 8 team members who will touch, or be apart of your home building process. We have most of those roles broken down below!

Construction Manager: primary focus is scheduling and managing all Hemme Construction job sites. Works directly with sub-contractors and vendors to ensure quality and timeliness on all our homes.

Foreman: focuses on managing concrete, landscaping, and warranty work as well as seeing a project out to its completion. Works with clients after they purchase a home to be sure they are comfortable with where everything is and how it operates.

Construction Worker: helps wherever needed, but often spends time working alongside our Foreman.

Finish Carpenters: do quality work including flooring, trim and tiling showers and backsplashes.

Office Manager: involved in our Custom Home Building Process. Is in contact with Custom Home clients from first meeting, through the selection and contract phases.

Administrative Assistant: works closely with our office manager to help with accurate record keeping and accounting.

Custom Home Specialists: keeps accurate records of the work that gets done on our job sites and is sure to pay our subcontractors in a timely manner.

Marketing Specialist: manages and creates content for all social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Linked In, and YouTube. Interacts with clients on all platforms and makes sure all messages are responded to in a timely manner.

Mizzou Women's Basketball Commit meets the Construction World

At Hemme Construction, we're different. Yes, we build beautiful homes of the utmost quality, but we are so much more than our product. We not only have a team here at Hemme, but a family! This past August, we had the privilege of taking on Averi Kroenke, a high school student at Rockbridge, as an intern for the semester. Averi chose Hemme Construction, "because I live in a Hemme Home, along with one of their subdivisions, Creek's Edge. I have loved all of the different homes that they have built, and I had an interest in architecture & home design; I wanted to see what their process was!"

What is one thing that you found interesting during your internship?

I found it interesting how they can remember and refer to every house they are building, or have built, buy a lot number!

What is one thing that you learned that you were surprised by?

It surprised me how small details, whether the wall corners are rounded, or straight or the slope of the roof, can really determine the price of a home.

How did the internship meet your expectations?

It exceeded my expectations! Everyone on staff was so welcoming and made me feel like an important part of the team. Everyday, Brooke and Emalee would have something interesting or new to do, and I have learned so much from them, along with everyone else who is apart of the Hemme team!

How would you describe the work environment here at Hemme Construction?

The environment at Hemme is very welcoming and fun! Everyday, the staff welcomes me with a smile and asks me how my day was going!

What is your favorite memory while interning for us?

My favorite memory was getting to tour all of the different houses Hemme is building and see all of the client's floor plans "come to life"!

What new skills, techniques, and knowledge did you gain this fall?

I have learned about the process of designing floor plans, interacting with customers, what materials to use based on a client's budget, to continually check with the construction crew to make sure the floor plan is being built correctly, and much more!

What was the most rewarding thing about working with Hemme Construction this fall?

Definitely the amazing relationships I have built with the Hemme staff, along with learning new things about home design and custom home building!

Would you recommend this internship to other students? Why or why not?

Yes! 100%! I have learned so much and they did everything they could to make sure I gained the experience that I was looking for! They took me to houses about to sell, ones that were in the framing stage, along with vendors to see how they pick out different interior decisions with a client. I also got to sit in on meetings, interact with clients, design floor plans, and so much more! I have gotten to do so much, and I am so thankful for this experience!

What do you believe is the next step in your career, and did Hemme help you get there?

Before entering this internship, I was very unsure of what I wanted to major in next year at Mizzou. This internship has shown me how much I enjoy designing homes along with floor plans, and I could definitely see myself doing something in this industry. Next year, I plan to major in something that allows me to pursue a career in this field!

When these clients came to us with their dream home, we mixed in so many personal touches into one of our floor plans, to make their house a home. The rustic flare that this home brings welcomes anyone to walk right in.

The antique door brings you into a huge walk in pantry, that adds so much more storage to this open-concept plan!

As you walk downstairs, you are greeted with floor to ceiling windows, bringing in tons of natural light. The wet bar enhances the overall rustic aesthetic, along with personal characteristics.

Mid-Missouri Modern Twist

When our client came to us with a modern twist on one of our house plans, our creative gears began to turn. With this being one of the most modern custom homes we have built, we had so much room to explore ideas! We slowly began to work in a modern-contemporary twist on this stunning 3 bed, 2 bath slab.

We quickly added an open vault entry, with metal soffit to add the modern flare on the exterior. We also switched out the stone for the clean stucco look.

The little details didn't stop on the exterior of this home. Custom cabinetry and a custom fireplace tie in the modern flare that was executed on the outside, welcoming guests inside.

One thing that we strive in here at Hemme Construction is our level of opportunity that we can allow our clients. We take pride in one of our prized possessions, our data sheet. This sheet allows the clients to be as involved as they want in the decisions that will make their house their home; this lays out every single option that the clients have chosen, from big things such as the colors of windows, to small things like trim and door knob styles.
